When new TVs are announced each year, manufacturers make bold claims about improved brightness, contrast, and picture quality. I recently had the opportunity to compare the LG G4 OLED and G3 OLED TVs side-by-side, and I was impressed by the differences.
The LG G4 OLED boasts a second-generation Micro Lens Array (MLA) panel and a new Alpha 11 processor, which provides a significant increase in brightness and contrast. The G4 can reach a maximum brightness of 3000 nits, compared to the G3’s 2000 nits. This difference is noticeable, especially in scenes with bright highlights.
I noticed a difference in color accuracy between the two TVs, particularly in scenes with bright colors. The G4 OLED showed more vivid red and ginger hues in a scene from the movie Argylle.
The LG G4 OLED features an improved upscaling algorithm, thanks to the Alpha 11 processor’s AI Super Upscaling feature. While the difference was subtle, I noticed slightly more detail and gradation in non-4K content.
• The LG G4 OLED offers improved brightness and contrast compared to the G3 OLED.
• The G4 OLED shows more vivid colors, particularly in bright scenes.
• The TV’s upscaling algorithm has been improved, but the difference is subtle.
• The G4 OLED is a better option for daytime viewing, thanks to its increased brightness and anti-glare coating.
The LG G4 OLED is a sensational TV that makes significant improvements over its predecessor. While it may not be worth upgrading for current G3 owners, it’s definitely the best pure OLED TV available right now. Stay tuned for our full review, which will cover the TV’s design, features, and capabilities in greater depth.
