As we count down to the release of Black Myth: Wukong on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, fans of Souls-like games are eagerly anticipating the title’s fast-paced combat and Chinese mythology-inspired backdrop. But did you know that Wukong draws heavily from the classic novel, Journey to the West?
Published in China during the 16th century, Journey to the West is widely considered one of the greatest Chinese novels and one of the most influential works of its time. The story follows the pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang, a Buddhist monk based on the real Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang, as he searches for sacred texts. Joining him on his journey are three protectors, including the infamous Sun Wukong, the Monkey King.
Wukong, a monkey with supernatural abilities, was imprisoned for 500 years as punishment for defying the gods. His journey protecting Tang Sanzang is an act of atonement. The novel combines real-life events with Chinese folklore, creating a rich and immersive world.
Influencing Pop Culture for Centuries
Journey to the West has inspired countless works, including Dragon Ball, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, One Piece, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Its impact on popular culture is undeniable.
