Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has recently made headlines with his changed stance on Epic exclusivity for Borderlands 4. After previously predicting Steam’s decline and touting Epic as a viable alternative, Pitchford has admitted his hopes for Epic were “misplaced or overly optimistic”.
As a reminder, in 2019, Gearbox released Borderlands 3 as a timed Epic exclusive on PC. At the time, Pitchford believed Epic’s technological investments would surpass Valve’s, and that Steam might become a “dying store”. However, this hasn’t been the case. Epic failed to capitalize on its advantages, and Steam continues to dominate the market.
Pitchford has now stated that he will “continue to root for and support competition” and hopes that Epic will keep pushing forward. Gearbox will continue to support Steam while also releasing Borderlands 4 on the Epic Games Store. It seems the gaming industry is far from seeing a decline in Steam’s popularity, and other storefronts still have a long way to go to catch up.
